Success is chasing everyone, but no one seems to find it. This word is on the minds of 99% of the population as a destination that never seems to arrive. It is also a word in constant evolution, as its meaning related to money is losing ground to individual interpretations of it. Although one thing remains the same, it is always related to our egos.
Man's ego is highly related to success because they are born entitled to win, predominantly white males. Men are raised believing they are worthy of whatever they want to chase, resulting from a patriarchal society. Nobody wants to be seen as a loser, but on a man, it hits harder.
Most still equate success to money; this is a result of a capitalist society. But I believe capitalism's essence is also confidence. The self-confidence implanted in faking it until you make it is where men thrive and women "die."
The process of being seen as successful is often dehumanizing for women. We must constantly reinvent ourselves many times more than men, continually discovering new facets of ourselves that people find brilliant. And to reinvent yourself only in a way people find to be equally comforting for them but also challenging for you — since you can't be seen as a threat either.
I've been having a hard time feeling any sense of victory when I achieve something, as I commit myself to self-sabotage instead due to social expectations about what is seen as a success. How much is your ego not your amigo? Even though I come from an entrepreneurial family, I was raised to believe traditional jobs that give you that sense of money security, and benefits are more valuable than mine. I'm trying to be as educated as possible to deprogram the traditional patriarchy in my brain, although it's not that easy when you are not gen Z.
Success hunts me the same way it evolves inside of me. Because in the end, people won't remember your slides; they will remember you. And I am sure of my authenticity and values. Yet, how our default mode becomes less self-preoccupied? Stop measuring my success through your lenses.
As a woman entrepreneur, you've got to find a community that supports not only the woman you are today but the woman you want to become. Sometimes you may feel like been left behind, but the reality is that you're running your own race. You are your own competition, always working on your best self at that time. There will always be room for you. Give yourself permission to start over and find other types of success along the way. And tell me, what is success to you?
